Things to Do

Peaceful countryside all around, with the best-loved towns and villages of the Gers close by. Heritage, food and wine, golf, walking and summer festivals fill the days, and there is always the pool.

Towns and villages

Lectoure, ten minutes away, is a hilltop town of art and history on the pilgrims' way to Santiago de Compostela, with a cathedral, a Friday market, cafés and restaurants, and a thermal spa with an indoor pool of thermal water, a hammam and treatments. La Romieu, Condom, Fleurance and the fortified village of Larressingle are all within about half an hour, and Auch, the capital of the Gers, is about an hour away.

Food, wine and markets

Gascony is one of France's great food regions: duck and foie gras, Lomagne garlic, summer melons, Côtes de Gascogne wines and, above all, Armagnac, with family estates happy to show you round. Every week the markets fill the squares, Lectoure on Friday, Fleurance on Tuesday and Saturday and Condom on Wednesday and Sunday, and in summer the villages lay long tables for evening food markets. Eating out ranges from village bistros to restaurants in the Michelin Guide.

Golf, walking and festivals

Golf de Fleurance, a nine-hole course, is open all year, with more courses near Auch and Agen. Walking and cycling trails cross the hills, hot-air balloon flights drift over the countryside on calm mornings, and in July the sunflowers are in full bloom. Summer brings the festivals: Jazz in Marciac, one of Europe's leading jazz festivals, from late July, Tempo Latino in Vic-Fezensac at the end of July and the Fleurance Astronomy Festival in early August.
